Tottenham Hotspur fans could potentially be frustrated with what they have suddenly seen from Emerson Royal over the last few weeks after his form has improved.
What’s the latest?
The Brazilian made the starting XI on the weekend in the impressive win against Manchester City, however, his performance was perhaps even more surprising than the result.
Following the exit of Djed Spence and Matt Doherty over the January transfer window, Emerson pulled out his best display in a Spurs shirt.
However, this comes just days after Spurs brought in their new £44m right wing-back, Pedro Porro, on transfer deadline day from Sporting CP.
Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Pete O’Rourke claims the Brazilian’s recent displays will have some fans wondering where he has been hiding this form since he arrived in north London:
“Yeah, he’s been excellent in recent weeks. He was superb against Man City at the weekend. I think the big problem for Spurs fans is they don’t see it consistently enough with Emerson Royal.
“And that’s why he’s been a bit of a figure of ridicule among Spurs fans over the last few seasons as well. But if you can perform to that level, it shows he can definitely do it at the highest levels.”
Choosing his time to shine
Since Emerson arrived at Spurs, his performances have been a real mixed bag but this season has seen fans voice their frustrations towards the 24-year-old.
The defender has made 17 appearances in the Premier League this season and has been able to provide a return of one goal and one assist (via Transfermarkt).
But his inclusion in the side has seen fans vent their anger in recent months with a section of fans booing when the 24-year-old was brought off the bench instead of Spence.
However, what we all saw on Sunday evening in the victory against City was nothing short of stunning.
The Brazilian was awarded a jaw-dropping 10/10 rating by the Spurs correspondent Alasdair Gold on the back of the result, with the journalist adding:
“Made some great challenges in the second half in a running battle with Grealish, including one perfect one on the England man in the Spurs box. His best game in a Tottenham shirt and Grealish was constantly frustrated by his defending. Man of the match.”
It is little surprise Emerson received such high praise given he recorded six clearances, two tackles and two interceptions against the reigning Premier League champions (via SofaScore).
However, there could well be frustration that this standard of performance has come at a time when fans will be excited to see what Porro can add to Antonio Conte’s side.
Spurs now have two games in the space of four days so it will be interesting to see how the Italian uses his options at right wing-back with Porro looking to make his debut for his new club.
