Mark Duffy may have only recently signed a new two-and-a-half year deal with Sheffield United in January 2018, but given he is 33 years of age it won’t be long before the Yorkshire outfit need to find a long-term replacement.
The Liverpool-born player spent much of his career on the wing, but he has established himself as a key player for the Blades in more of a No.10 role behind the two strikers in Chris Wilder’s preferred 3-4-1-2 formation.
The former Birmingham City man has scored two goals and provided a further three assists – all of which came in the 3-2 win against Millwall at The Den – in 11 Championship appearances, playing a big part in the club topping the league standings at this early stage of the campaign.

Even though he has plenty of time left on his current deal, it will come to the stage where he needs to be replaced – especially seeing as 92% of Blades fans who voted on our recent poll believe he is the club’s most important player – and he will need to be replaced well.
We at Football FanCast believe that Reading’s John Swift is a potential candidate to do exactly this, even if he has gone slightly off the boil for the Royals in recent times.
The 23-year-old certainly made a big impression and nearly helped his side rescue a point from 2-0 down when he came on as a substitute in a 2-1 defeat at Bramall Lane last season, and that is something Wilder perhaps hasn’t forgotten about.
We asked Sheffield United fans to vote on our poll to tell us whether they think Swift would be a good long-term replacement for Duffy, and a majority 63% said he would be, as you can see from the results below.
