Manchester United are eyeing a £200m move for unsettled Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale, who earns £650,000 per week, according to the Sun.
What’s the story, then?
The Sun report that despite scoring two goals in the Champions League final to see off United’s bitterest rivals Liverpool, Bale was not spoken to by his manager Zinedine Zidane for over three hours post-match.
That has reportedly given United hope that a deal worth £200m, before his bumper wages, can be done, having held an interest in signing the Welshman since 2012.
However, the report claims that Bale has concerns about working under Mourinho and the style of play he is using at Old Trafford.
Mourinho’s methods are no fun
Manchester City and Liverpool, United’s two deepest rivals have enjoyed seasons where their style of play is genuinely fun; fun for the players to play in and also for the fans, who are paying ever-increasing amounts of money to attend matches, to watch.
United, by contrast, are a spluttering machine, grinding out results on the basis of the individual quality of their players but that approach has failed to win them a trophy this season.
Bale is already at a ruthless, trophy-accumulating machine; if he does leave, it will be for gametime but also for greater enjoyment. He won’t get that at United but Mourinho must convince him otherwise.
