Everton are interested in signing West Ham United defender James Collins, according to the Irish Sun.
What’s the word?
The Merseyside outfit have been big spenders in this window, recruiting seven players so far and parting with more than £100m.
The Irish Sun claim that Collins is next on Ronald Koeman’s radar, but the Everton boss faces competition from Stoke City and Crystal Palace.
It is believed that clubs are confident that they can get their hands on Collins for £2m as he has just one year remaining on his contract at the London Stadium.
If the Hammers fail to agree a new deal with the defender, then manager Slaven Bilic would reportedly be open to offloading him.
Is this a good move?
At the age of 33, Collins is in the latter stages of his career and if he moves to any top Premier League club he is unlikely to get regular game time.
He would have more of an opportunity of playing if he dropped into the lower leagues, but there is a big attraction when it comes to Everton.
The club’s spending this summer indicates that they fully intend to push towards the Champions League spots, and having a chance to be part of that is a big draw.
For Everton, new signing Michael Keane is expected to go straight into the lineup, while Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams are still solid options.
With Ramiro Funes Mori out injured, Collins would be an experienced defender to call upon, and at £2m it’s a good deal.
