da bwin: The BCCI has appointed match referees even fordomestic tournaments
da apostaganha: Sakyasen Mittra07-Dec-2000The BCCI has appointed match referees even fordomestic tournaments. There is one in Calcutta tosupervise the ongoing one-day Ranji Trophyfixtures in the East Zone. However, it is notknown what report Anil Sen from Himachal Pradeshwill give on the match that took place betweenBengal and Tripura at the Eden Gardens today. Forthe record, Bengal won easily by nine wickets. However, when Tripura bowled, every other bowlerseemed to be chucking. The ICC has always beenstrict on `chuckers’. However, in Indian cricket, chuckers are aplenty. That is mainly because, thematch referees and the umpires refuse to enforcethe laws of the game. It was very difficult tojudge a single legal delivery from the two Tripuraoff-spinners Saurav Dasgupta and Sanjoy Bose. Theybowled 15.4 overs amongst themselves without theumpires calling a single no-ball. Had Bengal lost, there would have been a hue and a cry. But whybother about the laws when the game has been won?Bengal put Tripura in to bat and restricted themto 152 for nine at the Calcutta Cricket andFootball Club Ground. The visitors managed toreach their modest total because of a fifth wicketstand of 80 runs between Chetan Sachdev and RajibDutta. The former batted quite fluently and evenhit left-arm spinner Shiv Sagar Singh over long onfor the only six of the match. However, in goingfor a non-existent single, Sachdev was run out for51 (96b, 3×4, 1×6). The highlight of the Bengalfielding were two catches by Nikhil Haldipur. Hetook a brilliant diving catch at gully of mediumpacer Shibshankar Pal to send back SauravDasgupta. Then he took another one, running behindfor at least 30 metres from mid off to long-off tosend back Sajjad Hussain. The spoils were sharedmainly by the medium pacers. Shibshankar Pal tookthree wickets while debutant Sanjiv Sanyal andLakshmi Ratan Shukla had two apiece. Sanyal washowever guilty of bowling seven no-balls.Bengal reached the target for the loss of ArijitBose in 31.4 overs to romp home by nine wickets. The non-inclusion in the first two Ranji Trophyfour day matches seems to have done a world ofgood for Haldipur. He showed that while remainingunbeaten on 87 with 14 boundaries. The trademarkdrives through the covers had returned. Withcompatriot Arijit Bose, Haldipur put on 119 runsfor the first wicket to take the game away fromTripura. Bose got out giving a return catch toSaurav Dasgupta. He was beaten in flight whileattempting a drive and lobbed a simple catch backto the bowler. Debutant Sanjiv Sanyal who bowledwith a lot of bustle and Haldipur got theremaining runs with elan.
