other batsmen have occupied this slot in the last six years: Steve Waugh,
Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar and (very briefly) Inzamam-ul-Haq. After his
batting feats in the last 18 months, Flower is a worthy new joiner to this
exclusive club.The feat of endurance that in the last three days brought him two big
centuries against one of Test cricket’s stronger attacks has lifted Flower
to 895 points, 18 points clear of Steve Waugh. He is the first Zimbabwean
and the first wicket-keeper ever to go top of the Ratings.Flower’s outstanding form in the last 18 months won him the FICA/PwC
international player of the year award in July, when a panel of former Test
