The agent of Turkish midfielder Serkan Bakan has told ESPN that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing the teenager.
What’s the word?
The 16-year-old, who currently plays for Gaziantepspor, attracted the attention of the Premier League after becoming the youngest goalscorer in the Turkish Super Lig last season.
Bakan scored the goal in a game against Antalyaspor, but he ended up on the losing side of a 4-1 result.
The midfielder’s representative Ibrahim Polat has claimed that Tottenham and Manchester United, as well as numerous clubs around Europe, are tracking the player.
He told ESPN:
“Manchester United and Tottenham have been scouting Bakan. Several clubs from Germany have also been keeping tabs following his debut season in the Super Lig.
“He already has goals in the cup and league. Serkan is a special talent, so it is natural for there to be a lot of interest.”
Should Tottenham go for it?
The North London outfit have proven over the last few years that they value their academy.
Harry Kane is a perfect example of how developing youth can be successful as he is now arguably the first name on the teamsheet for Spurs.
Dele Alli moved to White Hart Lane when he was 19 years old and has now cemented himself as a regular in Mauricio Pochettino’s setup.
There is no doubt that Spurs have the resources to produce a top talent, so Bakan would be in very capable hands.
Pochettino puts faith in younger players, so the Turkish midfielder’s route to the first team may not take as long as it would if he were to join another club.
As he is only 16 and is used to first-team football, it might be wise for his new club to send him out on loan as long as regular minutes can be guaranteed.
